Foreign credential recognition in Spain

If your family is moving to Spain from another country, one of the most important procedures is the homologación (credential recognition) of your children's studies. This process allows the Spanish education system to officially recognize academic qualifications obtained abroad.

Homologación vs convalidación: what's the difference?

Required documents

  1. Official application form
  2. Student's passport or NIE
  3. Official academic transcript with grades
  4. Original diploma or certificate
  5. Apostille of The Hague (or consular legalization for non-Hague countries)
  6. Sworn translation into Spanish by a registered translator
  7. Proof of fee payment (~€50)

Step-by-step process

Step 1: Prepare documents in your home country

Before leaving, obtain official academic certificates and apostille them. This is crucial as obtaining apostilled documents from Spain is much harder.

Step 2: Sworn translation

Have all documents translated by a sworn translator registered with the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Step 3: Submit the application

Submit online (through MECD electronic office with digital certificate), in person at the Ministry or government sub-delegations, or by certified mail.

Step 4: Wait for resolution

Legal deadline is 3 months, but in practice it can take 6-12 months.

Step 5: Receive your credential

If favorable, you'll receive a credential certifying the equivalence of your studies.

Country-specific particularities

Latin America

Bilateral agreements facilitate the process. Documents in Spanish don't need translation (but do need apostille). Generally faster processing.

EU/EEA

Benefits from the European qualifications framework. More straightforward recognition for equivalent levels.

United Kingdom

Post-Brexit, British qualifications (GCSE, A-Level) are still recognized but require apostille. Specific equivalence tables exist for IGCSEs and A-Levels.

United States

High School Diploma has equivalence with Spanish bachillerato. Official transcript required, apostilled and translated.

Temporary enrollment during processing

Important: your child can be provisionally enrolled while the homologación is being processed. Spanish law guarantees the right to education for all minors, regardless of administrative status.

FAQ

Can I start the process from outside Spain?

Yes, you can submit through Spanish diplomatic representations (embassies and consulates) in your home country.

Do I need to validate all years?

Not necessarily. Primary education doesn't require validation. Convalidación is needed from 1st year of ESO. Full homologación is needed for ESO and Bachillerato certificates.
