Escola Sant Joan

Escola Sant Joan is a public school in Berga that provides early childhood and primary education. It offers a school meal service and extracurricular activities, and operates in Catalan and Spanish.

Throughout the school year, the center develops various learning projects. Students in the upper grades work on news stories and create a news broadcast; they also write and record rap songs after learning about the historical and social context of hip-hop and critically analyzing social issues. In the musical field, two orchestras from the center perform a repertoire of music from different continents, and in early childhood, the universe of sound has been explored through play and experimentation. Students use Chromebook computers to work on language, and in the initial grades, they have performed dramatizations, such as a fragment from the opera Carmen. Additionally, the children in early childhood have created their own stories through cooperative work.

The center promotes mentoring between students of different ages, who meet throughout the school year. It organizes outings and visits, such as a visit to the Parlament de Catalunya, a trip to Avià to learn about how bees live and their role in pollination, and a visit to the Coves del Toll in Moià to learn about prehistory. It also celebrates sports days and water games, and maintains a connection with local culture through the Patum festival, where students prepare floats such as turks and little horses, clubs, guitas, the eagle, dwarfs, and giants, and create drawings about them.
